MSS was hired to vision, program and lead the interior design of the 30,000 sf Michael E. Busch Annapolis Library. Annapolis is situated on the Chesapeake Bay and is known as “America’s Sailing Capital.” Light reflecting off the surrounding water is a common setting enjoyed by residents. This concept is carried throughout the library by maximizing natural daylight and through the color palette and natural materials. Interiors were designed to highlight the community’s notable institutions, its sailing culture, and shipbuilding industries. History and memory are detailed throughout the library. George Washington’s 1783 resignation as commander-in-chief speech is enshrined in the wall coverings, and the map of the Maryland State House is the flooring pattern in the historic reading room.
Margaret and her team created the most beautiful library building for our system, and the best library I have ever experienced! The community is so proud of this symbol of hope, liberty, and learning.
